His skill in magic helps those like him reach safer locales, but those familiar with his clan may note that his short-shorn hair speaks of mourning. APPEARANCE His ruddy, light brown skin and black hair makes the contrast with his yellowish eyes even more pronounced - especially with his vibrant orange limnal rings. His height, horns, and coloration make it impossible to blend in with a crowd, but he does his best to dress non-descript to compensate. Aspects That Stand Out: ■ Being Au Ra, in general. His eye color specifically is striking. ■ Eorzean speech is limited and heavily accented. ■ Usually wears plain, lower-class clothing. ■ Avoids physical contact. BIOGRAPHY The name he was born with and the clan he was born to are unimportant now. Nagae's talent for magery was identified at a very young age, and he was adopted by the Kurugane clan: monk-like mages who taught their arts in the small rural villages of Doma. Here, away from the urban centers, the Garlean Empire and its troubles were distant things. Nagae grew into adolescence under strict tutelage, which kept him on the 'straight and narrow' path of the great magicians. Teenage energy and boyish rough-housing was channeled into chores, footraces, and games of physical skill like dawari. Female students were taught in separate villages, keeping distractions for both genders to a minimum save for occasional festivals or illicit visits by those both brave and foolish. The reality of the Garleans struck home suddenly when, on intelligence that the Kurugane mages were assisting and training rebels, the military began a nighttime slash-and-burn raid of the villages. Some escaped; most died, and many were taken prisoner. Nagae was one of the latter, and held in a P.O.W. camp for nearly two years before his fortunes changed. Life in the camp wasn't easy, and not every prisoner was Kurugane, or Au Ra. It was here that he met a Miqo'te woman name Nishina Umei, heavy with child. He saw her begging for extra food from a Garlean guard; the man humiliated and mocked her, then still refused her pleas. Nagae stepped in and claimed that the woman was his wife, and the child his, and that she had the right to use his rations card as well. It was a clear lie to everyone involved, but the Garlean was more interested in petty bullying than facing down an Auri mage. She was allowed access to his rations card -- leaving less for Nagae himself -- and within a few days, all the camp knew of their 'marriage'. Nagae maintained the ruse for the next year. The escape started as a fight between a prisoner and guard. What started as a scuffle quickly became a riot, and after two years of growing complacency from the Garleans and growing resentment from their inmates, the latter were successful. The camp was liberated from the inside out, and the survivors, now armed, fled their own ways. Among the casualties: Nishina Umei and her infant daughter. Nagae survived. He shaved his head in mourning of the family he'd pretended to have, and travelled with other refugees to try to find places not flying Garlean Empire flags. Eventually he was found -- not by soldiers, but by a familiar face he'd seen once before, in the Kurugane village. Tsuruko Mizuhiki, a scout and watcher who now wandered the Eorzean city-states, recognized him in a small group of refugees near Limsa Lominsa. It had been a long time since either of them had seen anyone from their pre-rebellion lives, and soon Nagae at developed a friendship and business arrangement with his fellow Au Ra. She assists in his integration into a new society, and he assists her in gathering intelligence from the ever-constant stream of people fleeing the Garlean Empire. ABILITIES Nagae is first and foremost a mage. His training and education has given him a formidable range of utility in multiple disciplines, thanks to the unique traditions of the Kurugane clan. His speciality, however, is in healing magic... which he can easily twist to harm, when need be. His intelligence lends itself well to general problem solving and observation; he is literate in Doma and several magical scripts/languages, and is learning how to read Eorzean writing. Despite this, most would characterize him as rather superstitious! Physically, Nagae is fit but somewhat weak for an Au Ra, even a Raen. His youth included footraces, grappling, and fistfights for physical conditioning, but he was primarily a scholar even then. His time in the Garlean prisoner camp, sharing the limited ratios with Umei, meant that he suffered from extended malnutrition. He is mostly, but not completely, recovered. He has no true martial or weaponry training, and would be at a disadvantage to almost anyone who is quick with a knife - provided they get past his aether-spirits first. Teach him a new game, and within a month he'll beat you at it. He carries with him the typical Kurugane attitude: polite, reserved, and somewhat formal, although he's more friendly and outgoing that his masters may have preferred. In hardship, Kurugane is a stoic: this, too, shall pass. The secret to happiness is to enjoy what one has, when one has it. He does what he can to help those he views less-fortunate than himself, but he also knows that ultimately assistant and charity is a 'hand up', not a permanent solution.
