The day of her seventh birthday, a drunk driver caused a severe collision, killing her mother on impact right in front of Valentina's eyes. Her father suffered some bruises and a leg injury, while Valentina herself went through major head trauma, some broken ribs, a few broken fingers and displacement of a vertebrae. She has eventually made a full physical recovery, but the traumatic loss of her mother has left the biggest impact, both on her as well as her father. Feeling guilty and devastated, her father would be coming home late, stay away from home for days and quite often travel for a week. Valentina was always left with food and money to easily get by in her father's absence, but it meant she would have to start taking care of herself already then.

She has shut herself in, shunning most social contact unless needed and had very few friends. As nightmares would regularly prevent her from getting more than a few hours of sleep, she'd resort to reading to keep her mind occupied, starting with school books and later going through her father's collection of various books. Learning entertained her and she was among the top in her class. Over the years she slowly coped with her loss and started to develop a more social life and got into her first relationship at age 14 to a boy a few years older, who eventually tired of her cautiousness and ended up forcing himself onto her, putting another dent on her sanity, making her distrustful (especially of men).

Since then she has gone through a number of phases, suffered depression, anxiety, self-harming and sense of worthlessness; all while trying her best to appear as normal as possible to those around her. Getting into sports and training her body to keep the nerves in check was not enough and she often got into fights - where she proved to be relentless and very resilient to pain, soon earning the nickname "Valkyrie" (as she was, for short, called Val). Soon after she started smoking, resorting to alcohol and drugs and eventually sex, but not relationships. When she was 18, her father quit his job and left home, leaving everything to Valentina. The apartment was too spacious for one person and not all that cheap, so she got a part time job and had a friend move in with her. Living together they have come to trust each other and become a couple, Valentina's first lesbian relationship. Valentina never continued her schooling, instead she pursued a career in the army. She showed great promise as a soldier, always pushing herself and striving to be the best, showing great physical prowess, topping marksmanship scores and high proficiency with explosives. Months later she had to take medical leave due to severe knee injury. It was during that time that her girlfriend died of sleeping pills overdose while heavily inebriated.

Broken, Valentina started to drink heavily and became aggressive, after her knee healed she regularly got into bar and street fights that she would usually initiate to sate her lust for (self) destruction. She would end up beaten often, but it didn't matter to her. Pain and pleasure seemed the same in the drunken haze that became her reality, until she was beaten by her closest friend and convinced that she needed help. She then admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital where she was diagnosed with depression, suicidal tendencies, delusions of guilt, manic outbursts of violence, auditory hallucinations and debilitating nightmares. Upon accepting the fact that she needed help and with the help (and drugs) she received in the hospital, she did strive to get better and was eventually released. She didn't want to go back home. She packed the necessary things and followed her father's footsteps - abandoning home and travelling around the world, taking occasional jobs wherever needed, for some cash, a meal, a roof - for years. It was only after becoming a bee - manifesting her powers scared her and the Dragon has helped her - that she has settled down. A bit.
